Venn Nemeth & Hart has implemented a vacation programme targeted mainly at third year and fourth year LLB students. The programme has been running for a few years and we select the students from both campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, namely, Pietermaritzburg and Durban, University of Zululand and direct applications.

The primary aim of this programme is to afford the students an opportunity to gain practical experience in a legal firm as the University curriculum tends to be very theory based. Inevitably a student who has vacation work experience will have an advantage when it comes to applying for articles. The programme also enables our firm to determine whether we would want to establish a long term relationship with the student and vice versa, the student is able to determine whether they view us as a hub for their growth.

Our programme runs for a period of two weeks during January and the June vacation period. The students are exposed to the following core departments of our firm:

• Litigation Department;
• Commercial Law Department
  (which includes public law, wills and estate planning and some labour law);
• Conveyancing Department;
• Debt Recoveries;
• Accounts.

Each student is allocated to a supervisor for the day who ensures that the student receives insight into the going-ons in that department.

The students' feed back is critical for us as it directs us to ways of how we can improve the programme .
